Renault Kwid Hatchback First Drive Review

Renault Kwid Overview

The Renault Kwid 2018 has been launched today. The car gets a lot of features and is hence called the Kwid Feature Loaded Range. Available in 8 trims with segment-first features, the new Renault KWID 2018 Feature Loaded Range has been launched at no additional price, further enhancing its value proposition. The Renault Kwid has been a redefining product in its category. The Renault Kwid 2018 is one of the few cars to take on the mighty Maruti Alto 800 and provide some stiff competition to it. The Kwid is not compromised in terms of features as much as others in the segment. Do read further to know more about the Renault Kwid 2018 Feature Loaded variant.

Renault Kwid Style

Either way, the look is just right, with thick cladding, a rugged grille, nicely detailed headlamps, neat looking tail-lamps, chunky fog lamp enclosures and a square shape overall. The 180mm of ground clearance give it the requisite stance, and though the 155/80 tyres and 13-inch wheels seem weedy on paper, they don’t look too bad on the car. It really does look like a shrunken version of its bigger stablemate, the Duster.Apply car loan for Renault Kwid at Fincarz.

Still, this is ultimately a budget car, and this can be identified by clever bits of cost cutting like the exposed tow hook at the front, the three-nut wheels and their plastic covers, the single wiper, and the manual-adjust exterior mirrors. Less impressive however is a lightness to the build you feel in the way the doors and boot shut. In fact, at just 660kg, the Kwid is even light for its size and class, and about 50-60kg lighter than rivals like the Alto and Eon.

Renault Kwid Space

The interiors of the Renault Kwid 2018 bring in some freshness in the segment. The interiors are spacious and they look amazing when compared to the competition. The first thing that catches your attention is the touchscreen system. It has Bluetooth and navigation too. The competition does not offer this feature, even as an accessory. The instrument cluster is all digital and that stands out. New features on the Renault Kwid 2018 include a reverse parking camera, rear armrest, new and a rear charging socket. Among these features is also the Rear ELR (Emergency Locking Retractor) across all the variants. This allows the rear seat belt to freely extend and retract with occupant movement, yet locks the belt during a sudden stop or upon impact.

The Renault Kwid 2018 has oodles of space too. There is ample of head room and knee room in both the rows. There are a lot of storage spaces that are not found on its rivals. This is where the Kwid shines over the competition. The Renault Kwid 2017 isn’t just spacious but at the same time even practical. This hatchback has a boot space of 300 litres, which is a lot more than that offered on hatchbacks that are a segment above it.

Renault Kwid Performance

No changes have been made under the hood of the Renault Kwid. There is a 799cc petrol engine that produces 53 HP and 72 Nm. This 3-cylinder unit offers decent performance in the city but feels underpowered when you try to pick up speeds on the highway. It is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox which offers light shifts and the clutch is equally light too. On the fuel efficiency front, this engine delivers anywhere between 17-21 km/l. This engine isn’t offered with an AMT gearbox.

The other engine on the Kwid is a 999cc petrol unit and this is also a 3-cylinder engine. This churns out 67 HP and 91 Nm. In comparison to the smaller engine, this one feels peppier and livelier. In city driving, the performance increment is instantly noticeable and the Kwid feels responsive. On the highways, the car has enough grunt to reach 100 km/hr but if you intend to do very high speeds, the engine may not feel up to the mark. The Kwid 1.0 is also very fuel efficient giving out 16-20 km/l. The 1.0-litre engine gets a 5-speed AMT too which increases the convenience quotient by a huge extent and even though the shifts aren’t exactly lag-free, you can’t expect much at this price.

Renault Kwid Driving

Ride quality is really impressive though, in true Renault fashion. Despite its tall ride height, the suspension has been really well calibrated to offer minimum body roll and movement over bumps; it feels really nicely held together for a budget car, in fact. Even at the rear seat, passengers aren’t tossed around too much over rough roads. Thanks to the superb setup, the car goes through corners very tidily as well. However, it’s spoiled by the steering which is quite lifeless and doesn’t return to centre freely. It’s light, which will be a boon in the city, but it’s also very slow, requiring many turns, lock to lock, so three-point turns aren’t as easy as you might think. That’s a shame, as a good steering setup would have complemented the suspension to make for a really fun car to drive. For more details on Renault Kwid check Icassp2003

Renault Kwid Conclusion

The Renault Kwid is a good package and is a popular choice among people who want to buy their first ever car by upgrading from a 2-wheeler. However, the car lacks in the safety department and it scored 0 stars in the NCAP crash tests and it still misses out on ABS and a passenger side airbag. If you’re on a really tight budget and cannot stretch further, go for the Kwid 1.0 but if you think you can spend around Rs. 1-1.5 lakh more, we’d totally recommend getting the Tata Tiago which not only is slightly bigger, but also offers more features, better safety and feels like a well-rounded car.
