Porsche Cayman is counted amongst the world’s best sportscar, the reasons for which are clear and justifiable. The older version of Cayman was not as smashing as this one and the Cayman S reminds one of the older versions of Porsche racing cars with its crouched look and wide bulgy sides. Even from the look of it, you can easily make out that the aerodynamics of this car is brilliant. The cabin is a typical Porsche with quite a lot of similarities with the new Porsche Boxter. The interiors are spacy with some exciting touchscreen panels and comfortable seats. Like always, this Porsche sportscar is known for the raw performance and the newer version gets a downsized engine which can produce more power. The max power stutters out at 7400rpm and from stand still to 100kmph can be touched in less than 5.3 seconds whereas the 200kmph mark takes 18.9seconds. The electric steering does much for handling but could have been more clear and sharp. The wheelbase is longer which requires higher grips and adjustability is seamless. There is no doubt that this model series looks very attractive in terms of external appearance owing to its distinctly designed exterior cosmetics. The newly introduced trim too looks to be attractive, as it has distinctly designed sporty cosmetics. This GTS trim has a lot of black accents on its exteriors along with 10-spoke design alloy wheels and sporty headlamps that distinguishes it from other trims. Its frontage gets a trademark oval shaped clear lens headlight cluster that houses halogen projector headlamps along with LED DRLs and turn indicators as well. It also has a smiley shaped bonnet embedded with prominent company’s insignia. Unlike most of the vehicles, its front windscreen has a concave structure that is further accompanied by a pair of wipers and washers. The air intake sections are placed in the front bumper that renders a sporty stance to the front facade. Its side profile has a coupe sort of design with curvy shoulder line and beautifully carved wheel arches. However, its rear fender is accompanied by an air inlet that provides better ventilation for engine cooling. It also has a very sleek window lining that is garnished with black accents. Its door handles as well as ORVM caps are garnished in body color that further adds to its elegance. Its base trim gets a set of stylish alloy wheels, while the S and GTS trims are blessed with 10-spoke design rims. Coming to the rear end, this vehicle gets snake-eye shaped, clear lens taillight cluster, which is equipped with advanced LED brake lights and turn indicators. The tailgate and the windscreen are quite small but the company lettering on boot lid gives it an astounding appeal. As far as the interior goes, we haven’t gotten a good look inside this prototype. Even if we did, we probably wouldn’t see much anyway. The interior of the Macan is already pretty top notch. It’s filled with sophisticated and strategic lines, precise transitions, and more than its fair share of leather.The seats may end up getting a different stitching pattern but should carry over with just as much side support. The dash will go unchanged, but new trim inserts may be offered. The Burmester, 16-speaker system should get a minor update but will likely come with the same 300-watt, class-D amplifier. The Bose system will still be an option and pump out 545 watts. Eight-way power seats up front should be standard, but sports seats should be available as an option. It will, of course, have Porsche’s PCM system with an 8.4-inch touchscreen display.The only other changes to the interior may include a revised steering wheel and a revised instrument cluster. The infotainment display could get a software update to include new graphics throughout. Again, this is just a minor nip and tuck to get the Macan through the next few years, so less should be more in this case.


Every 2017 Porsche Macan comes standard with all-wheel drive and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission known as PDK. Porsche estimates that it will go from zero to 60 mph in 6.3 seconds, which would make it among the quickest in the segment for a base engine. Porsche estimates its fuel economy to be 22 mpg combined (20 city/25 highway), which would be average for the segment.The Macan S has a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 good for 340 hp and 339 lb-ft of torque. At the Edmunds test track, it went from zero to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds, making it the quickest car in the segment among the relatively few that come with an optional engine. EPA-estimated fuel economy stands at 19 mpg combined (17 city/23 highway). We achieved 20 mpg on the 116-mile Edmunds evaluation route and 17.3 mpg during our 12-month long-term test of a Macan S (we were having too much fun to be frugal, apparently).

The Macan GTS has the same engine and fuel economy figures as the S, but it produces 360 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. Porsche says it’ll hit 60 mph in 5 seconds or 4.8 with optional Launch Control.The Macan Turbo has a 3.6-liter turbocharged V6 that produces 400 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. In Edmunds testing, it did the 0-60 sprint in 4.4 seconds; nothing in the segment comes remotely close to that and those numbers put it on par with some seriously quick sports cars. It also gets the same fuel economy as the S according to the EPA, but given the allure of that power, we suspect real-world fuel economy will be nowhere near that.The new Macan Turbo with Performance package increases output to 440 hp and 442 lb-ft of torque. This is one area where it is really really really hard to come close to a Porsche let alone beating it. Each Porsche is made for a purpose and yet delivers an amazing driving experience even if the person wants to drive it like a sports car. This goes for (Panamera, Cayenne and now even the Macan). Panamera being a super luxury car and the Cayenne being a full size maniac SUV handle like a sports car or rather like how a Porsche should handle. Porsche Macan 3Despite the high ground clearance Porsche has made no compromise in comfort or drive. The suspension is soft in comfort mode and a bit still on sports mode. Sadly when you do a bit of offroading is where the flaw shows. The suspension feels too soft and the cabin feels like a rollercoaster. The braking of the Porsche Macan is excellent and stops like any performance car should. There were times when I may have required adult diapers and the brilliant handling of the car got me out of those situations with ease. The cushion of the suspension also depends on the type of tyre. Eg the Turbo comes with low profile that are very hard and you do feel some undulations specially on our INDIAN roads.


For the brightness of the road to be uniform, the Bi-Xenon headlights of the car just act as the perfect illuminators. The Porsche Dynamic Light System adjusts the range of drenched beams when the car travels at a higher velocity. The LED brake lights begin to pulsate when there is a panic braking. For the driver and the front passenger, full-size airbags have been installed for all Macan models and are supplemented by the Porsche Side Impact Protection system. Side airbags are available for the side compartments. The major safety measure of the braking systems is that the ceramic brake discs are completely resistant to corrosion and even under heavy braking; it maintains the high performance of the car, thus avoiding deformation.


We’ve been critical of the Macan range’s price in the past, so the lower price tag on this version of the SUV certainly makes big amends. However, the Macan is still not a cheap SUV by any standard and continues to score low on the price-to-size ratio. But seeing a Macan as just any other luxury SUV is missing the point. This is a sports SUV in the true sense, yet one that also gets you all the practicality and comfort of a mid-size luxury SUV. If you drive yourself and can stomach the price, the base Macan could make you very happy indeed.
